When sleeping on your back, do make sure your head is supported in the mid-line position, by ensuring your pillow is nicely supporting your neck so it is not too cricked forward or backwards. Just make sure your head is in the mid-line comfortably. In order to off-load your lower back, so it is neither too arched nor too flexed, try placing a pillow under your knees; this will hold your spine in the mid-line position, giving you a great night’s sleep when lying on your back.
Lying on your front is not the ideal position to sleep in, but if you insist, the best way to do so is as follows. Make sure your head is kept in mid-line position when possible; not turned to one side which will cause neck strain. Keeping your head in the mid-line will be easier if you place a pillow underneath your chest, as well as your stomach, which will off-load the arch in your lower back, particularly if your bed is soft. However, what will allow you to have the best night’s sleep when lying on your front is by placing an additional pillow beneath your knees, ensuring your back is not even minimally arched. Again, lying on your front is not the ideal position to sleep in.
Most sleep on their side. As with any sleeping position, you need to make sure your head is held in the mid-line position. Your head needs to be supported correctly; not cricked up with too many pillows, causing a strain in your neck. Sleeping with not too many pillows is the key to a good night’s sleep on your side. You may also feel more comfy when sleeping with a pillow under your side, particularly if you have an hourglass figure. An additional pillow underneath your knees will secure you in a comfortable position, so you don’t move out of position once asleep.
